Women’s Division Is Now Women’s Philanthropy

This month we introduce a name change that was adopted by the Women’s Division Board at its meeting on October 8, 2008. Women’s Division will now be known as Women’s Philanthropy of Jewish Federation of Palm Springs and Desert Area.

The change in name reflects a change that is deeper, that is broader and more powerful. It announces a change of vision, it announces a revitalization of the idea of tzedakah – an understanding that tzedakah is not charity, it’s PHILANTHROPY.

PHILANTHROPY means the love of all humankind. To dedicate oneself to philanthropy means to become an agent of change, to embrace the world, to work to have a lasting impact. It means to have a vision of a better life for all Jews, for all people, and to work to make that vision a reality.

Women have always influenced and guided their family’s giving. In the traditional Jewish family, one never heard the expression, “My husband gives.” The Jewish woman classically accepted it as her obligation, not as a woman but as an individual in her own right to help her fellow Jews.

This is a time when the largest transfer of wealth ever seen is happening. Women are a big part of that mix. Their impact is growing. Their ability is increasing – to take action in their own names, to build a legacy of tikkun olam, of healing the world, or setting a shining example for others to follow, now and into the future.

Today women from all walks of life have discovered the satisfaction, fulfillment and powerful impact that comes from an individual commitment. Through personal involvement, women are effecting policy and influencing change in our community.

All of us are proud of this new direction. We are proud that we have joined the national movement to be known as Women’s Philanthropy. We welcome you and invite you to participate in our activities and events.
